Since releasing our mentoring curriculum, the most frequent question I’ve received has been something along the lines of “How do you roll it out to the membership?”
In our club’s case, we hand selected two of our members based on their experience level PLUS their ability to teach others what they know in a nurturing non-critical manner.
Then we had them begin working with our older Junior Magicians who had aged out of our Junior Magicians’ program but were not yet old enough (according to our club constitution) for full club membership.
In taking these older young magicians through the mentoring curriculum, these two leaders were learning the curriculum themselves.
Now that they have a handle on the curriculum, we have begun inviting select members to go through the curriculum with the two who have already taken a group through.
Also when we have an event where multiple members will be performing (see poster below), we have them meet with the performers in a planning meeting to coordinate and facilitate the finessing of each routine with feedback from the other performers too.
We believe the sweet spot for a mentee is that spot in their magic growth where the allure of “What’s the latest trick?” has begun to wane and the new question regarding “How can I get more out of the tricks I own?” has begun to take over.
We believe the full implementation of a mentoring club program is a multi-year endeavor … but well worth it.
