Governance/Meeting Ideas: A Mentoring Curriculum

At least since the inception of YouTube, I have sensed magic clubs struggle with their place in the magic landscape. I know we are.

It no longer is enough to have a group come together to learn new tricks.

Ultimately our leadership team visited about what our members could get on YouTube and then worked to not duplicate what we had listed but rather to emphasize what YouTube could not provide.

High on that list came the role of relationships and in particular mentoring relationships.

However, we had a problem. Few of us had ever been mentored and consequently had little idea of what a mentoring relationship might look like.

Hence over a two-year period we developed a structure that would provide guidance to our members who wished to enter into a mentoring relationship. You can download the results of that effort complete with online videos and a flexible approach that allows the mentor and mentee use the magic tricks included in the curriculum or ones on which the mentee desires to concentrate.

We now have two of our more experienced members with “mentor’s hearts” (a disposition that can give feedback in a knowledgeable but nurturing manner) taking several less experienced members through the curriculum.

We see this then as a process that more or less continuously occurs behind the scenes as personal invitations are extended to those we believe are at a stage in their development where mentoring would be of maximum benefit.

As best we can tell that sweet spot is close to the place where the “What’s the latest trick?” stage no longer holds the same attraction it once had and the “How could I get better at performing the tricks I have?” has begun.
