The mature leader realizes that the end of every statement predictive of the future needs to end with the words “or not.”

By way of example

• “The deal will close next week” … “or not.”
• “Tomorrow we’ll go to Detroit for a meeting” … “or not.”
• “I’m sure she’ll date me” … “or not.”

The leader has accepted the fact that many factors affecting his/her future are out of his/her control. Consequently the mature leader holds on loosely to future plans.
