Governance: Text Message Groups

As a magic club grows, the need for creating small groups becomes increasingly important in order that each person feels as though they know at least five to seven people in the club.

Then when the whole group does meet (usually at least once per month), each person can enter the room and wave to someone(s) they know.

To facilitate this we have “working teams” (as opposed to “planning committees.”

Building a text chat group for each team has enabled me as Executive Director to stay in touch with many members quickly and frequently in matters both large and small.

Here are some long-standing groups we currently have in place: OMS Board, The Abbott House Board, Abbott House Members, Junior Magicians’ Team, Monday Night Magic Team, Exhibit Booth Team, Abbott House Class Faculty, etc.

Then we have some text groups that only come together for a particular event (such as attendance at a convention) and then disband once the event is over.

Adding to the fun (and to reinforce the group’s identity) is the fact that each team has their own text chat name and photo at the top of their group chat.

These text chat groups also help us maintain our goal to at all times have at least 50% of our members owning at least one meaningful responsibility/job in the club and reminding them on a regular basis of that responsibility’s importance to the club.
