Meeting Theme: Beginner Magic Kit Competition

Although we used this theme in January, it really has year-around appeal.

We found the magic kits for $5 at a store called Five Below and the rabbit statues initially on a Target store’s dollar shelves and then having lost them, we purchased alternatives on Temu for about $2.00 apiece – joking that we purchased them on Temu, and they sure looked bigger in the picture!

Prior to the evening of the event, four members had agreed to be team leaders recruited based on their knowledge of magic, their creativity in putting that knowledge to use, and their ability to facilitate their team members rather than dominating them.

The room was initially set with seven draped tables even though we knew this would be ultimately consolidated into four table teams.

The evening divided into three sections. Ten minutes were given to assemble the four teams; twenty-minutes were given the teams to open their kits and prepare their 5-7 minute performances using as many of their team members as possible; and then 20-30 minutes were given to the performances and the awarding of the rabbits.

After two of the performances, we insert our raffle drawing to help change the pace of the event.

Although the poster indicates otherwise, those who joined on Zoom actually served as the judges – selecting the winning team.

During the twenty minutes that the teams were preparing their 5-7 minute performances, the Zoomers were reviewing our club’s Feedback Form (https://bit.ly/3S8gI14) – deciding on the criteria they would eventually be using to select the winning team.

While the Zoom participants/judges were deliberating, the in-person folks were encouraged to avail themselves of some refreshments.
