If you’ve been involved in magic for more than thirty days, you know that there is an entire skill set in being able to insightfully read and decipher with savviness an ad for a new magic trick:
• What in the ad is fact, and what in the ad might be honest hyperbole?
• What is actually being said – weighing each word carefully as to its meaning or lack of meaning?
• What isn’t being said in an effort to hide the method? What is omitted in the ad? Angles? Reset? Gimmicks needing replacements?
• What components of a trick are emphasized that might cause a customer to purchase it if for no other reason than to find out how this seemingly impossible mystery works?
In this activity each table team selects a different classic magic trick (i.e. cups and balls, linking rings, egg bag, chick pan, foo can, cut and restored rope, etc.) and creates a radio commercial using the ad building strategies utilized by magic dealers.
No out-right lying allowed.
The group presenting their radio commercial stands in the back of the room behind the other members while members face forward as though listening to a hand drawn picture of an old time radio drawn on a flip chart pad.
Sound effects in the commercials are encouraged.
The ultimate goal of this activity is that each member leaves being able to read magic trick ads with greater discernment.
