People seem to have a high energy around winning prizes.
And the value of the prize doesn’t seem to matter.
In my experience the energy comes far more from the fact that they won the prize, and the other people didn’t.
Consequently to add an energy component to our monthly events we conduct a raffle at every event excepting when we have a guest lecturer.
Most of the time there are three winners each month with each winning a DVD that has been donated by other members for this very purpose.
On a side note, walking around distributing the raffle tickets prior to the meeting also helps ensure that each attendee gets personally greeted/welcomed/introduced around by the person distributing the tickets.
