Meeting Activity: Placemat 5

With this placemat for your meeting, you’ll probably need some children’s scissors close-by too.

Have each person fold their placemat using the lines as guides.

However, they can each fold them differently (i.e. with the letters to the inside or outside and the creases folding the sections inward or backwards).

Eventually everyone’s packet will be folded into eighths. The scissors are used to cut through all the thicknesses around the edges of the packet – dividing the packet into a stack of eight separate cards with a letter on each one.

Have each person put the face up cards in one pile and the face down cards in another.

Please Note: They may not mix the piles.

Each person may now pick up either pile and attempt to create an English word. If they can’t create a word from the cards in one pile, they then can try with the cards in the other pile.

As they concentrate, you tell them the word they created.

If the instructions are followed, the word CAGE will be the only English word they can create!

Of course you could use the brilliant Hoy’s Tossed Out Deck principle – seemingly telling three different people the words they built before teaching the entire group the principle involved.
