Meeting Activity: Object Lesson

You begin your meeting with this statement, “In the middle of the table, you’ll find a pen.

As a table team, generate three ways in which that pen is like an accomplished magician. Everyone at your table stands up when you have your three.

When everyone at every table is standing, you can all sit down.”

Then you go to each table leader and get the three qualities a pen and an accomplished magician have in common.

What you’ve just done in a few short moments is revisit the qualities of an excellent magician that we all need to be reminded of from time to time.

Truth be told the item could have just as easily been a spoon, a bowl, or a set of car keys.

Connections to the intangible will be made by the table team.

Therein lies the power of an object lesson (a physical object serving as a metaphor for a concept).

However, please note that the leader let the members generate the list themselves. Truth is “People don’t argue with their own data.”

Actually the activity as presented in this example might be quite a fine lead in for the activity you’ll find in this post.
