This classic team building activity has stood the test of time.
However, here’s how we use it most often with our project teams – helping them get to know each other better.
- Each person is given a blank index card with a pen or pencil.
- On that card each person writes four facts about themselves with the understanding that three of those facts must be true with one being a lie. The goal is to trick the others into believing one of your truths is your lie.
- Round One: Beginning with the group leader, each person reads their index card – keeping their very best poker face during the reading.
- As each person reads, the others write down the numbered statement they believe was that person’s lie.
- Round Two: Each person reads their list again after which all the others one at a time indicate what they believed the lie to be. The person who has done the reading then reveals their lie from the list.
- At the conclusion, someone in the group emerges as the group’s best liar and another as group’s best detective.
It’s kinda what magicians need to be good at.
Even folks who have known each other for a long time usually learn something new about each person which just might a conversation starter.
