Here’s a tool based on the axiom that “people don’t argue with their own data.” Whereas they might argue with your data, they won’t argue with their own.
Consequently the Effectiveness Grid is basically an empty sheet of paper with lines and dots. In its innocence, lies its effectiveness.
Assume that you’d like to get your membership feeling the need to learn more about presentational skills. You might begin by distributing Effectiveness Grids to each participant – having them list individually in the blanks the qualities of a strong magic performance.
In an activity like this, we find it best to have the individuals complete the form first before comparing and adding to their list from the lists of others sitting at their table. Everyone doesn’t process content at the same speed, and this ensures that everyone gets their ideas heard.
After hearing the list from other members at their table, you might even have them stand up and go visit with three people not at their table to see if there are others to add to their list. Then they could go back to their original table – sharing the new ones they’ve added.
Finally, each member goes through the list and conducts a self assessment – scoring himself/herself in each of the categories from STRONG to WEAK depending on how they see their skillsets.
This will now give each person areas on which they might wish to concentrate as you roll out some content on the various areas of effective performance skills.
You might choose to adapt our club’s Magic Mentoring Curriculum based on our Performance Feedback Form if that ends up being the focus of your Effectiveness Grid.
