A panel provides variety in the communication of content. We periodically use this format when we distribute an article ahead of time and then have several members and a moderator discuss it in the front of the room (for no longer than twenty minutes).
To add even more variety the moderator always has the option to ask the audience to address a question to any of the panel members about what s/he might have said.
We have found that a key to the effective use of panels is the selection of a moderator who knows how to keep the discussion moving right along and when to stop it when s/he senses the energy in the room around the topic has begun to wane.
