Our club works hard to make sure we have no sacred programs.
As long as we have members passionate enough to be involved in leading a program or providing a service, that program or service remains active.
When those who had the passion leave the club or move away, and no one else in the club cares enough to carry on, that program ceases to exist (until maybe someone else comes along who cares about it).
However, more often than not a new person has joined the club by that time with a passion for something entirely different. I believe programming has a better chance to stay fresh with this approach.
As Executive Director, I really try hard to convey through both my words and actions to all of our leaders in every one of our programs that they are NOT running the program FOR the club.
Rather the club is supporting them with resources to run their program. This personal ownership happens as the individual gets a chance to express themselves in the manner in which they administer the program. I have found program ownership in the hands of that program’s leadership produces consistently higher motivation.
