When our club hosts a lecture, we’ve found it helpful to ask the members to submit questions ahead of time as to what topics they wish the lecturer to address.
And I must confess that I’m certainly not above submitting to the lecturer along with the members’ questions some questions of my own based on where I believe we as a club need some additional focus.
This practice not only helps ensure that the lecturer covers what members believe to be important, but I believe also helps lecturers whose creativity causes them to be a little more scattered bring greater focus to their lectures.
Maybe this is as good a time as any to address my personal view of lectures and magic clubs.
Inasmuch as YouTube and numerous magic dealers offer superb lectures online, having a magic club host a lecturer is no longer in my opinion as special as it once might have been.
And also like spice in a dinner I believe too much spice spoils the meal. My experience has been that too many lectures can decrease the specialness of each one.
Currently we host an average of three lectures per year (with sometimes a fourth one just for the club’s core members). We believe that this relative infrequency helps keep them special when they occur.
This allows us to also focus the other monthly events on that which does differentiate us from YouTube and other online streaming lectures … the relationships we build as we watch and learn from each other.
