Meeting Activity: Managing Audience Energy

The bell shaped curve remains a classic visual depiction of data.

However, truly great performers know it also accurately depicts an audience’s laughter or applause energy too.

Both start quietly, build to a crescendo, and then taper off. Savvy comedians step on the laughter or applause with their next line when the energy has just crested its peak. They know if they let it totally dissipate – going down to the end of the bell shaped curve, it will be more difficult to restart.

Instead the performer contains the energy – stopping it as it crests and begins its decline.

Effective magic meeting MC’s are equally in tune with the energy in the room – monitoring the energy when discussions are occurring at each table rather than waiting to move on only when all table teams have completed an activity. Instead s/he will give a one minute warning and then stop the conversations when it’s obvious the energy peak has been reached, and it’s begun its decline.

If the energy is not managed, the discussions will finish, and the tables will begin another bell shaped curve. However, this time it will be on a random topic of their choosing – deviating from the focus of the meeting.
