Governance: Small Groups

Once a magic club grows to about twenty to thirty people at a monthly meeting particularly the long-term members can begin to feel like “I don’t know everyone in the club anymore like I used to.”

At this stage, if a club hasn’t already implemented the intentional strategy of leveraging small groups, we find small groups increasingly important to overcoming the possible resistance of some members to future growth.

In reality EVERYONE in the club does not need to know EVERYONE else in the club. However, everyone does need to have a small group of friends in the club with whom they feel connected.

Here are a few of our project-oriented small group teams we use to implement this important principle of club growth.

Having multiple opportunities gives the membership choices. Choices motivate adults.

In addition to the above project-oriented small groups, we have members who host other small groups based on specific magic interests.

Finally, one additional small group opportunity has been the encouraging of group trips to magic conventions.

Much camaraderie can occur during a car trip to a convention, a special group text chat starting the week before the convention and then that same text group used to exchange ideas that members might discover during the convention or even hosting a special event (Pizza Party?) just for your members at the convention.

You can read more about our leveraging of this additional small group option on our website at: https://theomahamagicalsociety.org/conventions
