In order to avoid falling into the mistake warned of in our earlier poster of “Unsolicited advice may be viewed as criticism,” ask if the person desires your feedback. 

This courtesy gives the person permission to accept or decline your feedback as well as the timing of your feedback. We could all hear ourselves possibly saying “This wouldn’t be a good time” depending on what else might be occurring that day.

This is particularly true when seeking to give feedback to a superior.
