Graphic Leadership: Self Knowledge

leaders

A wise man once said, “If you know me better than I know myself, I’m at a real disadvantage in our relationship.”

“Know yourself” has been an wise axiom down through the ages.  But how do we get to know ourselves.  I’m convinced that it is only as another acts as a mirror – reflecting back to us how they perceive us do we ever grow in our self knowledge.  Growing in self knowledge outside of significant relationships is much like pushing a rope uphill.

Face validity of that truth occurs as one considers the modern day hermits who have removed themselves from society and have become increasingly isolated socially.  Most if not all became odder and odder.

So one of the key tasks of a leader is to speak truth into the lives of his/her followers – helping them see themselves more clearly both in terms of strengths as well as areas requiring greater attention.  The leader mustn’t wait for someone else to tell a follower that s/he isn’t good at this or that.  That’s one of the leader’s responsibilities.
