Graphic Leadership: The Leader’s Values

Values

In the entry entitled Inner Drive, we spoke of four internal sources of energy in the life of a leader.  The leader’s Values was one of those drivers.

Now this poster provides for us a tool for helping to define those values in ourselves and in our followers:

  1. Begin by printing out a copy of the poster so you can go through it – circling four words that correspond with those most important considerations in your life;
  2. Then score each of the four on a scale of 1-10 as to its particular intensity in motivating you; and finally
  3. Take a moment to decide which of the four is truly the primary value that drives your life.

Be careful to select your primary values based on your actual behaviors and not what you believe the values should be.

The leader understands that when s/he puts his/her hand to a project in which their values are embedded, the motivation around that project will be highest.  Seeking out their own intrinsic motivation and the intrinsic motivation(s) of their followers is an important pursuit of a wise leader.
