Governance: Learned Optimism

As a leader, are you more of a glass half empty or a glass half full type of person?  In other words, are you more of an Optimist or a Pessimist?  I personally  believe the best answer is “NO.”

Martin E.P. Seligman in his book Learned Optimism helps us understand that effective leaders are truly neither Optimists or Pessimists but rather embrace a perspective Mr. Seligman called Learned Optimism.  Avoiding the extremes of either the Pessimist or the Optimist, the Learned Optimist seeks to find balance between the rose colored glasses of the extreme optimist and the doom and gloom of the equally extreme pessimist.
