Graphic Leadership: Expressing Needs and Expectations Pocket Guide

howtocommunicate

This poster has been designed to be a laminated pocket card to carry in your wallet or purse for easy reference.

The excellent leader excels at communication.  Not only when s/he is addressing a group but even in casual conversation such as when expressing a need or expectation.  Here’s a poster with a quick summary of the components.

  1. Talk about what’s expected and why.  Leaving out the why component of this step can easily cause the recipient to feel “talked down to” or “ordered around.”
  2. Talk about what you’ll do.  What support and follow-up are you willing to offer; and
  3. Check for understanding/acceptance.  Give permission to the follower to give you honest feedback with ideas, suggestions, and their acceptance (or not) of the request.
