I don’t know of a non-verbal gesture that says more about a person than “The Shrug.”
At its best it says “I don’t know.” However, that interpretation really gives The Shrugger the benefit of the doubt.
More often than not it says “What’s a guy to do? What do you want me to do about it? I don’t know, and I don’t care.”
It is truly the non-verbal of a person who perceives themselves as powerless. That’s why you never see it coming from a leader.
Instead you’ll hear a true leader say “I don’t know, but I’ll find out” or “I don’t know, but let’s figure this out together.”
A Leader (with a capital “L”) knows s/he’s never powerless. There are always options.
