A fellow was challenged to walk on a narrow board laying on the ground.
“Do you think you can do it?” the man was asked. “No problem,” the man replied – walking the length of the board without stumbling off the board even once.
Then the man had his attention directed towards a board high above his head suspended between two buildings.
“Can you do the same thing with that board?” the man was asked as the inquirer pointed to the board.
“No way!” the man quickly replied.
“But it’s exactly the same board in length and dimensions” was the reply to the man’s lack of confidence. “Are you afraid the board will break?” the man was asked.
“No,” he replied. “The board is plenty strong.” “Then what’s the problem?”
The man replied, “I’m too afraid that I would fall,” the man responded.
And you know what? He probably would have.
He would have been so fearful of falling that he would have created a self-fulfilling prophecy through those beliefs.
That’s the power of fear. That’s the power of our beliefs. A leader knows that managing both his/her fears and beliefs is key to gaining mastery over consistently leading with strength.
