A seasoned leader knows that the giving of honest feedback to his/her followers is part of the job. The leader also knows that leveraging the difference between perception and reality is one of the stronger ways to do it.
It might sound something like this as the leader speaks to the follower: “Cliff, in our anonymous 360 reviews, your co-workers indicated that they perceive you as someone who is unengaged at work – merely coasting until you can retire.”
“Whether that is reality or merely a perception of others, I believe taking steps to fix that perception might be something you’d want to do. What do you think?”
You will find that when approached in this manner, very difficult feedback can be given and received with a minimum amount of defensiveness and a maximum amount of receptivity. Now that’s a combination every leader values.
