Graphic Leadership: Perceptions

How a leader is perceived by others is at least as important as who s/he really is.

As an organization grows larger, the leader will actually be known by a smaller percentage of the total group. However, even those people who do not know the leader will make decisions about the leader based upon their perceptions alone. They will never know the leader well enough to make those crucial accommodations to pthe leader’s quirks and idiosyncrasies.

This poster illustrates the phenomenon of how differently the same person can be perceived by those who are viewing them in close proximity versus those who observe at more of a distance. By moving the poster further and then closer to your eyes, the lesson becomes quite dramatic.

A wise leader will encourage their followers to at least annually give him/her feedback on how s/he’s coming across to those s/he leads. Usually this is done anonymously online with something even as simple as SurveyMonkey.com.

Once the leader knows how s/he’s being perceived, s/he can create a strategy to correct the misperceptions that exist.
