A leader understands that the feelings s/he experiences are never triggered by a situation. This would make the leader powerless to get in control of his/her emotions.
Instead s/he knows that the feelings the leader experiences are produced by his/her own thoughts about the situations that seem to be causing the emotions.
Granted those thoughts can occur in a fraction of a mili-second. However, the only hope of a leader getting in control of his/her emotions is to capture that thought – evaluating its validity.
Which of your emotions do you have difficulty controlling as a leader? What thoughts are the triggers of those emotions? How valid or invalid are those thoughts?
Building solid refutations for the invalid thoughts will enable you to respond in the moment – disarming the emotional explosion that otherwise might occur.
