A mature leader doesn’t confuse the fact that s/he’s had a relationship or history with someone for a long time with whether or not that relationship is a healthy relationship.
In fact, many times the longer we’ve been in a relationship with someone, the greater the chance the relationship might be toxic as dysfunctional patterns might have become accepted norms of the relationship – excusing those behaviors with such phrases as “That’s just the way s/he is.” or “Better to let sleeping dogs lie.”
Nothing can get better while a leader is confusing history with healthy. Yet it’s so easy to do.
