Contented is not a word that many leaders want used to describe him/her. They want to be seen as a “hard charger” or “driven for success.” However, I believe many times the leader has merely confused the word content with the word complacent.
The dictionary defines the word content as: in a state of peaceful happiness: he seemed more content, less bitter.
Whereas the same dictionary defines the word complacent as: showing smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one’s achievements: you can’t afford to be complacent about security.
It seems to this author that the challenge is for the leader to be accepting of his/current lot in life so (as the poster reminds us) s/he can truly be grateful and peaceful. It appears to speak to and attitude on has about his/her present circumstances.
However, the word complacent draws attention to a lack of motivation (even a laziness) about bettering his/her life as the leader moves forward in life.
As a leader, my attractiveness (and earned authority) grows as I show contentment in the situation I find myself in today. However, when a leader exhibits complacency when looking to the future only lessens the follower’s respect for the leader.
