When a leader interacts with a follower, only one of them will usually get their ego needs met. If the leader enters the interchange to get his/her ego needs met, the follower probably won’t. The leader might try to impress the follower with how much s/he knows or how much power s/he wields. The follower will feel “less ok” than the leader and their own ego needs might actually increase as a result of the interchange.
How much better for the leader to “leave the ego at the door” when entering a meeting with a follower – allowing himself/herself to be taught, rescued, and served. Then the follower will get his/her own ego needs met and will look forward to the next meeting when in an ever-increasing pattern that will happen again.
