Graphic Leadership: Discomfort Won’t Kill You

poster-discomfort

Dare to stare discomfort in the face.  In fact, stare it down.  It won’t kill you.  However, if you don’t stare it down, it might.  It might kill your joy, your enthusiasm, and your personal growth and satisfaction from life.

Is it uncomfortable for you to talk with people?  Commit yourself to “The Three-Foot Rule.”  David Sandler told himself that if he stood next to someone for longer than a minute, he would ask them, “What do you do?”  That began many enjoyable (and profitable) conversations for David Sandler.  Was there discomfort in uttering that question?  Absolutely.  Did it kill him?  No.  However, every time he did it, his comfort zone stretched (see the Comfort Zone poster) for more on this subject.

Maybe you can’t stand to be alone.  If so give yourself an evening where you have to be alone and allow yourself to feel your way through the initial discomfort.  You won’t die.  However, you will be stretching your comfort zone.

When we run from the anticipated emotion of discomfort, we are often running from the very experiences we desperately need in our life to progress closer to the successes we long for.  A leader understands that.  A leader has learned to ride out those bouts of discomfort as natural emotions on the path to his/her goals.
