In Patrick Lencioni’s book entitled The Three Signs Of A Miserable Job, he says that a job in which a person feels anonymous, thinks his/her job doesn’t matter, and has no way to assess their own progress will eventually leave the “want to” level of motivation and enter the “have to” or “ought to” levels of motivation (if they don’t quit their job first).
A wise leader seeks to generate engaged employees who are recognized for their individual contributions and are given regular and meaningful feedback on their progress in job mastery and career advancement.
The amateur and non-creative leader will be satisfied to get the job done regardless of the motivation level behind the job. Only later will they act with surprise when they find among their direct reports burn-out, high employee turnover, and chronically low morale.
