Hire character. Train skill. said Peter Shulz, Former President and CEO of Porsche.  Another frequently quoted similar phrase is People are hired for their technical skills and fired for their people skills.

The universally admired/attractive character traits (i.e. Love, joy, patience, gentleness, goodness, self-control, etc.) are the foundations of good people skills.  See the poster entitled Character for more on this theme.

When a wise leader selects his/her team, s/he always places character before skills.   When a leader fails to do so, s/he (and the other people on the team) live to regret it.
