In 1970 revered Baseball Hall of Famer, Mickey Mantle said, “During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times times and walked about 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 bats per season. That means I played seven years without even hitting the ball.”
He’d agree with the quote by Henry Ford who said “Failure is only the opportunity to more intelligently begin again.” Most leaders do. They view failure as a natural part of life (see the Room of Reality poster for more on this topic).
Of course, this presupposes that the leader doesn’t run from his/her mistakes but rather takes time to learn from them. In order to not run from the failures, the leader must have mastered the concept taught in the Identity vs. Role poster elsewhere in this series.
