A leader makes it a discipline to know the difference (and mentally enforce the difference) between a “want” and a “need.” A leader often wants something to happen but doesn’t need something to happen. A leader may want someone in his/her life but doesn’t need that someone in their life. A sales person may want the sale but doesn’t need the sale.
When a leader goes from want to need, s/he knows that she has entered dangerous territory by placing too much investment in the outcome (over which they ultimately do not have control) rather than the process.
This soon moves the leader into The Drama Triangle where soon s/he will begin to feel like a victim.
