Whether the government recognizes them as such or not, leaders view themselves as self employed. They view themselves as CEO’s of their own company named after themselves with themselves in position as CEO.
They are responsible for the profitability of this company, the satisfaction of its employees, and the direction the company takes.
They take great care to manage and lead their own life with all the care of a CEO sitting at the head of the table at the largest of corporations.
