Graphic Leadership: Escaping Old Ideas

poster-difficulty

Old ideas can become the enemies of new ideas.  Old ideas have the power of familiarity.  Our comfort zones have adjusted to old ideas.  Changing from old ideas to new ideas will bring some pain with it.

How to escape from old ideas is a skill that a leader needs to know.  Old and out-dated ideas continue to exist because at some point the “why” got separated from the “what.”  We only now know what we do in a given situation but cannot give expression to the why. The “why” no doubt had clarity when the idea was initiated, but since has become lost.

Consequently, the leader is always asking “why questions.”  Why are we doing this at all?  Why are we doing it this way?  These “why questions” will help keep the leader as well as his/her followers connected to the reason for the idea and is actually one of the keys for escaping ideas that have outlived their usefulness.

See the poster entitled Necessary Endings for more on this subject.
