The leader understands that when respect and like are in a fight, respect had better win.
The leader who tries to get people to like him/her will do things much differently than those who have respect as their goal.
If you think in terms of your doctor, it helps to put things in perspective. If s/he was trying to get you to like him/her, what might s/he do when greeting you in the examining room? Bring you a free gift? Act enthusiastic?
If instead they were trying to gain and maintain your respect, how would s/he act? How would they allow you to speak to them? What would they not allow?
Strong leaders know that their followers might not always like them, but s/he will work their best at maintaining the respect of their followers.
