Governance: Accountability

poster-responsible2

This staple of management theory has stood the test of time.  “If everyone’s responsible for everything . . . then no one’s responsible for anything.”

Accountability is only possible when there is singularity of ownership around every project. The movement away from this important principle can be insidiously subtle in an organizational culture.  It oftentimes begins with the insight that more minds are better than one (which is true) as teams are formed and input is sought from more than one or two perspectives.

However, when the decision is made then someONE needs to own it.  A committee owning the decision is inefficient and undermines the level of accountability necessary to run an efficient and healthy organization.

Now might be a good time to look around your own magic club and see if accountability is being avoided through “management by committee.”  If so . . . the quicker you as a leader take steps to remedy that situation the quicker you’ll find your organization growing in its productivity and accomplishing its mission.
