Dr. Henry Cloud, in his book entitled Necessary Endings says, “The good cannot begin in earnest until the bad ends.” Quite often, leaders talk about starting things, beginning things, initiating things, and yet not enough time is spent on what are they going to stop doing. What they are going to quit, what has outlived its usefulness, what has become obsolete?
With a finite amount of energy, a leader learns to prune his or her life from those activities that are no longer contributing to their values, their end results, the goals they want for themselves. It’s a painful process, but they know that with only so much energy, they have to prune their life from time to time in order for the rest of their life to grow stronger.
My father said it this way, “Eliminate and concentrate.”
The good cannot begin in earnest until the bad ends. Leaders know how to end activities, relationships, and initiatives.
