I’ve included this poster because it illustrates graphically the need for flexibility in our thinking – perceiving things as other people see them. In order to successfully negotiate, I must be able to look through the eyes of the other party and see what they see – understanding why it makes sense to them.
Look at the cube and look at the circle. Can you see the circle in the middle of the front panel? Yes? Can you see it in the lower right hand corner of the back panel? Yes? Can you see it in the lower right hand corner of the front panel? How about the middle of the back panel?
Wow! It doesn’t stay there very long, does it?
Here’s my theory. Wherever you first see the circle is where your brain wants to take you back. It takes great discipline to see it from another angle. And that’s how it is as you seek to negotiate. It takes great discipline to see a situation through the eyes of another person.
But it can be done. In fact, a leader learns to do it, not effortlessly, but he or she believes in its value enough to master the skill and discipline.
