Graphic Leadership: What Do I Control?

poster-control(2)

As we work our way through this section on growing in our leadership confidence, here’s an important exercise. Make a two-column chart. List on the left side what you control. List on the right side what you don’t control.

We saw in the poster on confidence, that our fears come from the question, “What if _________?” The blank always being something we don’t control. So, it’s good to pause for a moment and think about what we do control.

You’ll find the left column has a very short list. I control my thoughts. I control my feelings. And I control my behaviors. That’s it. Everything else goes on the right hand side…what I don’t control. Whoa! That’s means I’ve got a lot that I could fear.

As a leader, I must focus on what I do control (i.e. my thoughts, my feelings, my behaviors). I do control those. I need to focus my attention on those.

Later on, we’re going to see goals and goal setting and how often we make goals around things we don’t control. How much better to make goals around those things we do control. Things we can actually affect, we can impact — our thoughts, our feelings, our behaviors.

As you bring your mind to focus increasingly on those components you can control, rather than the ones on the right hand side, you’ll find your confidence growing. Because trying to influence that which is on the right side is as frustrating as trying to capture the wind.
