Graphic Leadership: Discuss Don’t Demonstrate

poster-productivityWhen it comes to the world of emotions, truly great leaders know how to discuss their emotions rather than demonstrating their emotions; and they encourage their followers to do the same.

Demonstrating or displaying emotions causes the emotions to rise on the other party’s part as well.  None of us do well when we’re asked to think and feel at the same time.  In fact as we saw on the Emotional Composure poster, as emotions went up, logic came down.  It can get to where nothing moves forward and much energy is expended.

In the posters exploring transactional analysis and its application to leadership we discussed increasingly speaking from our non-emotional adult ego state when tempted to speak from our critical parent or even frustrated child ego state.

A leader knows how to let a person know of his/her displeasure without resorting to an “adult tantrum” which might actually serve to bring disrespect on the leader.
