Graphic Leadership: The Nature Of Faith

poster-faith

When we talk about putting our faith in another person(s), we might feel a little like the couple in the poster waiting to cross the street.  They are a very cautious couple and are waiting for 100% proof that a car won’t hit them when they set out to cross the street.

Of course we know that they will grow old on the corner waiting for 100% proof of their safety

They will have to eventually make decisions like we do every day.  We will gather all the proof we can (i.e. there are no other cars coming in any direction and the traffic light is green), and we will then cross the street.

The gap between the evidence we gather and the 100% proof we’d love to have is going to be filled in with what we call “faith.”  This time it’s faith in the evidence that we’ve accumulated and the statistical probability based on our past experiences of crossing the street.

This same experience happens every time we drive a car or sit on a chair or trust in a person.  We give the other person a measure of our faith in every relational transaction.  Sometimes that faith is well-founded and sometimes it’s not.  However, a great leader knows that there’s no other way.
