Leaders have come to understand that much of their life is spent trying to balance two components — excitement and security.
Excitement is when I’m out on the edge. The risk is very real. I’ve put something out there – waiting to see if the people that I’m leading are going to respond to it or not. Are they going to take a hold of the vision? Are they going to go the distance with me? That’s excitement. Those are the most insecure times, but they’re the most exciting times.
Then there are those times when things seem calm, security reigns, no excitement exists.
It’s keeping a balance between security and excitement that keeps the leader enthused, energized and consequently able to energize others.
When life becomes too predictable, too complacent, the leader loses his/her own energy and has no energy to pass on to others. When life becomes too exciting, the leader becomes too insecure and in those moments can’t project the confidence needed in order to keep his/her followers following.
Understanding this key piece can help a leader evaluate where in the balance their life is currently – readjusting the balance for maximum effectiveness as a leader.
