Graphic Leadership: Who You Aren’t

poster-anon

I really enjoy when I come across a quote that I can’t process completely on first reading. This poster contains just such a quote, “It’s not who you are that holds you back . . .” If I just take that first phrase of the quote, I recognize I’m someone with strengths. I recognize I’m someone with weaknesses. It isn’t the lack of my ability. It isn’t the lack of my cognitive skills that holds me back.

The second phrase in the sentence completes it, “. . . it’s who you think you’re not.”

“It’s who you think you’re not.” “Oh, I’m not like him, I tell myself. “I’m not like her. I’m not like them. I could never be as successful as they are. I could never be as financially secure as he is. I could never speak in front of a group like he does.” I could never — on and on and on, subconscious audio tracks play in our heads – limiting our progress.

The leader understands that these internal audio tracks are very present. He or she has identified what tracks are playing in their head and has built a series of responses for those audio tracks. So that when those audio tracks begin to play, the leader has a rebuttal – taking those audio tracks and negating the influence they have over their life.

Not only that, but truly great leaders teach their followers to do the same so that their followers can achieve their maximum success by adhering to the quote on this poster.
