When people start hearing that I make posters with sayings and diagrams, they start sharing with me their favourite sayings.
This quote comes from the head of a business unit at Tenaska, and I believe he called it his state fair or carnival metaphor. “When standing in line, from time to time, look over your shoulder to celebrate how far you’ve come.”
Whether we’re standing in a security line for a flight or a ticket line for a concert, the tendency is to always look forward to see how far we have to go before we get to the front of the line.
In order to maintain motivation, it’s important for a leader, from time to time, to look over his or her shoulder to celebrate how far they’ve come. I know of no stronger motivation, no stronger internal source of energy than that of gratitude. Gratitude comes from looking over your shoulder, not always looking to what more you need to achieve.
Take a moment. Look over your shoulder. Celebrate how far you’ve come.
